If you want to achieve outsized returns with your trading strategy then you simply cannot afford to follow a common strategy and you cannot afford to restrict your trading to the most common instruments. Following the averages is a great way to get an average return but outsized returns simply cannot occur using a regular strategy. In fact, as recent market turmoil has demonstrated a common and undiversified strategy will lead to rather weak performance. A portfolio of stocks invested over the long term would be fairing extremely poorly on even a long term basis after the recent market crash.

Diversity is best achieved not by investing in different industries but by investing in different investments. The problem with investing in different industries (while important) is that a major decline in stock indices usually leads to a steep decline across most if not all industry sectors. As such you should include alternative investment vehicles like fx trading and futures trading if you truly want to diversify and protect against a secular decline in any given area. Using currency trading, commodities trading, and futures trading allows you to have the exposure needed to perform well in any market. This is versatility that investing in stocks alone simply won’t provide.
